The Creative Shift : SEO Tips for Weird Artists Like Me

Mic check, is this blog working?

I’m not trying to go viral. But I am trying to make it easier for the right people—bands, art lovers, fellow weirdos—to find me. And I’ve learned you don’t need to dance for the algorithm, but you do need to speak its language sometimes. Honestly, once you figure out the phrases and keywords that gain traction, it’s pretty set it and forget it. The initial lift is a little much, but that’s what this blog is for.

This year, I started optimizing my site with the same intentionality I use in my art:

  • Renaming images with phrases like “surreal illustrative indie band poster”

  • Writing blog posts around common search terms like “poetry meets design”

  • Adding alt text to artwork like it’s its own hidden poem; hate this phrasing to be honest, but according to the SEO analyzer, it is better than “add alt text to artwork”.

You don’t have to be a sellout to be searchable. Just be specific.

Quick Hits You Can Try:

  • Write one post called: “If You Like [Artist], You Might Like My Work”

  • Make your About page answer: “What do you actually do?”

  • Use headers like “Band Poster Design That Doesn’t Suck” or “Design Packages for Touring Artists” - go direct and a little abrasive.

  • Link back to your own content like it’s a self-curated trail

Art that resonates doesn’t have to scream. But it does need a mic. SEO just happens to be one of them.

Curious how to make your art more findable without diluting it? I’ll be sharing more of what’s working on the blorg.
